Slimmer, taller, faster: the iPhone 5 is here
It seems the iPhone 5 has been on a diet before its unveiling in San Francisco today. It’s 18% thinner and 20% lighter than its iPhone 4S predecessor…
The question is, will it have enough desirable features to entice you to ditch your current phone for a shiny new iPhone 5? Maybe…
Taller and slimmer
Could it be Britain’s next top model given it’s slimmer and taller than its little sister, the iPhone 4S? The iPhone 5 screen is 10.2 cm (4 inches) which still makes it smaller than devices from rival companies such as Samsung. Yet its 16:9 aspect ratio provides a pleasing widescreen experience. Its super-thin 7.6 mm body will no doubt be salivated over by those sick of carrying chunky phones in their pocket.
Faster
The new model will be enabled to run on 4G, a higher-speed data service. The UK’s first 4G service will be rolled out to 16 UK cities before Christmas by Everything Everywhere (EE). Apple has confirmed the iPhone 5 will be available on the new speedy network.
More powerful
A new Apple-designed chip, named the A6, is said to make the iPhone 5 twice as powerful as the 4S. It also boasts a longer battery life (the short battery life has always been a complaint in earlier versions).
Pictures
The camera sensor remains the same as the iPhone 4S (8 megapixels) but apparently the iPhone 5’s upgraded camera will take better pictures in low light without using the flash, and includes more features such as panorama mode.
Smaller charging socket
A fairly big change is the smaller charging socket which means iPhone 5 owners will need to buy an adapter for it to be compatible with older speakers and equipment.

The iPhone 5 goes on sale in the UK (and the US) on Friday 21st September with pre-orders starting this Friday 14th September. As far as we’re aware, prices will be similar to the iPhone 4 and 4S.
