London underground

Mobile phones now feature in most areas of life – but it seems some places are sacred, according a new poll of Londoners.

A recent poll by goodmobilephones.co.uk shows that an overwhelming 76% of Londoners don’t want the proposed £100 million mobile phone network installed on their beloved Underground.

A similar survey conducted by tech website Shiny Shiny shows that 55% of Londoners would prefer the Tube to stay as it is – i.e. largely silent, and filled with passive-aggressive passengers avoiding each others’ eyes at all costs.

The reasons given for being against the Underground mobile network included the fear that people would be more vulnerable to theft, that other people’s calls would result in extra chatter and irritation, and that mobile phone operators would charge more for the service.

Our blogger Sam recently argued in favour of using mobile phones on planes – is the Tube about to become the new mobile frontier, whether we like it or not?

What do you think of the idea of a mobile phone network for the London Tube? Let us know below.
