A man cupping his ear to hear

It seems people are taking notice of their hearing. Followers of my blog have been flocking to the Action on Hearing Loss (AHL) website to take the quick hearing check.

Earlier I wrote about how a Yamaha dealership in Melton Mowbray set up a PC in their shop and encouraged bikers to take the test. I love to hear about initiatives like this – people doing something off their own back and trying to make a difference. Which is why I had to smile when I heard from Darral Jones, a BT colleague who works in Llanelli, South Wales.

As well as working for BT, he’s also a lead IT Volunteer with Age Concern.  Recently, he set up and ran three internet taster sessions at the Parc y Scarlets stadium – the home of Llanelli Rugby Club – to introduce this fantastic technology to seniors. He showed them how to shop online and keep in touch with friends and family.  But Darral had another trick up his sleeve. He also pointed them to the AHL web site via www.bt.com/hearinghealth

So, not only is Darral helping to narrow the digital divide, he’s also spread the word about hearing health. With more initiatives like this, we’re well on the way to getting 500,000 more people to take the check.
