Gaming technology could help deaf children learn to sign
You have got to see this. Learning sign language could become altogether more engaging if researchers at Georgia Tech College of Computing in the US have their way.
They’ve linked their own American Sign Language (ASL) recognition software with a Kinect, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaming motion sensor.
The result? The Kinect picks up the moves of the signing and the software ‘reads’ what is being said. It’s ingenious. They’re developing a game for deaf children called CopyCat. It’s been designed to that deaf children can practise ASL. The results so far have been extremely encouraging and now they’re working on developing this still further.
If this does make it from the research what a wonderful use of technology to help people. Just imagine the possibilities.
They’ve made a short video showing it in action. It’s well worth a quick look – watch the video now >
