Despite all our distractions, the TV is still king of media
Even though we face constant distractions from computers, smart phones and games, TV continues to rule the roost in the family home, according to new research.
The State of the Media Democracy survey from Deloitte revealed that 71 percent of those surveyed still rate watching digital TV on any device among their favourite media activities.
The survey also shows that live viewing on a home TV continues to be the most usual way people watch their favourite programmes. In addition, 86 percent of those surveyed said that TV adverts still have the most impact on their buying decisions.
Many people thought that the rise of the internet, mobile devices and social media would eventually kill of TV viewing, but this research states the opposite – that all of these new technologies and ways of communicating are enhancing our television viewing experience, driving us to watch first-run programs and live events when they’re first shown.
The survey also reveals that nearly three-quarters of respondents multi-task while watching TV – with 42 percent surfing the net, 29 percent talking on the phone, and 26 percent sending instant messages or text messages.
You only have to jump on Twitter when a popular show is being broadcast to see this in action – hundreds of people discussing the show as its being broadcast. So rather than the internet and social media taking away from TV, it’s helped to make it a more communal experience.
What do you think of the results? Do you multi-task while watching TV? Let us know below.
