Britain leads the worldwide wi-fi broadband boom
According to new research, the UK is leading the global wi-fi boom, with hotspots set to grow to a huge 21 million by 2015.
And as wireless hotspots grow, the way we use wi-fi is changing, with email accounting for 26% of our internet activity out of home, with social networking taking up 20% of our time, and web browsing 19%.
The findings come as all our current BT Fon and BT Openzone wi-fi services are renamed BT Wi-fi – making it easier for you to find a hotspot and get online when you’re out and about, using your laptop, smartphone or tablet.
We were one of the first providers to supply wi-fi in Britain, and we now have more than more than 475,000 in London, 30,000 in Birmingham and Leeds, around 21,000 in Manchester and Sheffield, 24,000 in Edinburgh and more than 13,000 in Liverpool, Brighton, Bristol and Cardiff.
An incredible 21,000 people log on to BT Wi-fi every minute during peak times and over one billion wi-fi minutes were used over the last three months on BT Wi-fi.
You can find BT Wi-fi hotspots in homes, independent businesses, city centres and well-known brands including Hilton, Thistle, and Menzies hotels, Starbucks , Welcome Break and RoadChef service stations, American Airlines and SkyTeam airport lounges plus Network Rail stations.
Look out for the new BT Wi-fi logo as we roll it out across the country in the next few months!
If you don’t have BT Broadband, you can still get BT Wi-fi access with one of our instant access vouchers. Find out more at www.btwifi.com.
