A staggering 13 million people in the UK have experienced card fraud online and on the high street according to recent research by CCP. If you want to avoid being caught out by the fraudsters, here are some simple tips:

1. Keep your cards safe

Only carry cards you need and keep them in a wallet. Don’t leave your card on show or give it to anyone as you never know who might be snapping a picture of it. Be careful at cash points and make sure you shield your hand when you enter your PIN. If, like me, you struggle to remember things, make your PIN something memorable (but not obvious) and never write it down!

2. Be careful what you say on the phone

Never give out sensitive information over calls you haven’t initiated as fraudsters often pose as banks and businesses.

3. Be cautious

We are shopping more and more online so we need to be extra vigilant. Get protected and make sure your computer has up to date anti-virus and firewall software. If your card is a MasterCard or Visa, register for MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa, which add a free extra layer of security by using a password. Only enter your details on websites you’re 100% sure are safe, and make sure you log-out. And finally, don’t enter details on links from emails as they could be from fraudsters.

4. Watch the post!

If you don’t receive a statement or a new card after your old one has expired, contact your card provider as fraudsters may have taken your mail. And if you move, tell your provider immediately and ask the Royal Mail to re-direct your post.

5. Check your statements

Don’t leave your statements lying on the pile of filing! Save all your receipts and check your statement against them as soon as it falls through the letterbox. If there‘s anything unusual (no matter how small) contact your card provider.

6. Destroy documents with sensitive informative

File your statements safely until you don’t need them anymore, when you should send them to the shredder!

7. And if it does happen…

Contact your card provider immediately! You’re protected by legislation and should never have to lose out financially, as long as you’ve been careful.
