The X Factor suffered its biggest shock in its nine year history last night as 16 year old Ella Henderson left the competition after a sing-off with James Arthur.

The appearance of undoubtedly two of the most talented contestants in the bottom two was met with outrage from the audience and the judges, particularly Tulisa who insisted that “the wrong people are being voted for.”

Former favourite Ella Henderson is out!

Both acts returned to the stage to perform in the sing-off against each other. Ella performed an amazing rendition of Daniel Bedingfield’s ‘If You’re Not The One’ before James sang an equally brilliant rendition of ‘Fallin’ by Alicia Keys. With all four judges absolutely furious over the result, they failed to reach a decision and so it was bought to deadlock. Ella, unfortunately, had the fewest public votes and so James was saved for another week.

James Arthur had to sing to survive

The 16-year old was gracious in defeat (however unjust it might have been) and said: “I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve grown so much.”

Ella and James had both been widely tipped to make the final. Saturday night’s ‘Guilty Pleasures’ themed week had seen flawless performances from both of them, with Gary telling Ella that it was her best performance yet, and James that he wanted him to win. So how on earth did they end up in bottom two?

Louis told Rylan (who was totally in his element this week as the ultimate ‘Guilty Pleasure’) on Saturday night that he thought it would be his final week and I think maybe Rylan did too given the look on his face as the results were read out.

Despite loving Rylan and his very amusing banter with Gary, surely it is at the point in the competition where talent really needs to outshine the entertainment factor? And is it just me (and Tulisa), but is there something I am just not getting about Christopher Maloney?

Ella is going to be really missed.

What did you make of this week’s shock result? Who do you think should have gone?
