Jorgie

What is it with Dancing on Ice and theme weeks? They can’t get enough of ‘em.

A couple of weeks back it was Movie Week. Last week we had “The Duel”. This week they opted for “Pop Week”: in other words, an excuse for the “skating stars” to dress up as their favourite popular music acts. Cue uncanny impersonations of George Michael (kids’ TV presenter Sam Nixon in a decidedly dodgy wig), Madonna (ex-Brookie actress Jennifer Ellison) and Lady Gaga (Dallas icon Charlene Tilton).

While the theme changed again, one thing stayed the same: Jorgie Porter and Matthew Wolfenden continued their tit-for-tat battle for the top spot. Jorgie triumphed this time round, scoring 24.0 for a sassy routine to Britney Spears’ Hit Me Baby One More Time. Incidentally, the autocorrect on my computer insists on renaming “Jorgie” as “Hottie”. Just saying.

Matthew wasn’t far behind with 23.0, delivering an impressive performance to ABC’s Look of Love. Snapping ‘at his skates were the athletic free runner Sébastien Foucan and the “still-surprisingly-good” Chico – both scoring 21.5 points. Other notable routines were Rosemary Conley’s elegant but not-quite-perfect performance to Fairground Attraction hit “Perfect” and Chemmy Alcott’s take on Kylie Minogue’s The Loco-Motion.

The skate-off

This week, it was Sam Nixon who joined Charlene Tilton in the Skate Off. After being in the Skate Off for three weeks running, Charlene must have felt that this particular feature of the show might have been invented just for her. In the end, not even performing the splits to Poker Face (demonstrating a flexibility that I imagine few 53-year olds can muster) could save her this week. The judges unanimously voted that she hang her skates up. She left, as far as I could tell, vowing to be “BFF” with virtually everyone on the show.

She should have waited until next week to declare her undying affection. Next week, we’re told, it’s a “Valentine’s Special”. I could have guessed…

What theme would you like to see the “skating stars” tackle on Dancing on Ice?
