What’s the secret of Adele’s stunning chart success?
She’s notched up a record-breaking eleven straight weeks at the top of the UK album charts, and has also hit the top spot in the US. So what is it about Adele that makes her so popular?
As she says herself:
“As soon as I got a microphone in my hand, when I was about 14, I realised I wanted to do this. Most people don’t like the way their voice sounds when it’s recorded. I was just so excited by the whole thing that I wasn’t bothered what it sounded like.”
Just as well really. She first came to attention via the BBC’s Sound of 2008, and quickly followed her crowning as that year’s star with her debut album, 19 – which has so far sold over a million copies, and has found its way back into the charts in recent weeks.
Her second album 21, has so far sold over 1.5 million copies and has spawned two huge hit singles, making her the first living artist since the Beatles to have two top five hits in the UK single and album charts at the same time.
On release of her first album back in 2008, Adele said:
“I don’t know what’s going to happen if my music career goes wrong. I haven’t had a proper job yet.”
I don’t think she needs to worry too much, do you?
