The end of an era? Blue Peter and other kids’ shows set sail from BBC1
There has been a heady mix of consternation and nostalgia on social media since news broke that children’s TV shows would no longer feature on BBC One and BBC Two.
Many Twitter users of a certain age took to the social network over the past two days to bemoan the loss of children’s TV on the main BBC channels – with many cries that it was the ‘end of an era’ and ‘the loss of their childhood’.
It all stems from a BBC announcement on Wednesday, which outlined the fact that the BBC Trust has given the green light to director general Mark Thompson‘s Delivering Quality First proposals – including moving all BBC children’s programmes to the CBeebies and CBBC channels.
Following the country-wide digital switchover, CBBC and CBeebies will be available to all UK households, meaning that children won’t miss out on their favourite shows.
Many supporters of the move have argued that it makes no difference to young viewers where they find their fix of Horrible Histories, Newsround and Blue Peter, but nostalgic naysayers have argued that family TV viewing will be reduced – with different members of the family increasingly watching different channels at different times.
Sara Broad, lecturer in English and education at the University of Reading, argued to BBC News: “Sadly, the downgrading of programmes like Blue Peter and Newsround to the digital channels CBBC and CBeebies sends out the message that children’s television requires less and less consideration.”
