Shock for Star Wars fans around the world as Disney buys Lucasfilm and announces new Star Wars films.

“Do or do not, there is no try,” Yoda famously said and it seems Star Wars creator George Lucas has decided not to do Star Wars anymore.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” Lucas said.

“I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of film-makers.”

Disney announced their purchase of Lucasfilm from chairman George Lucas for £2.5bn yesterday.

Disney plan to release three new Star Wars films with the next one, episode seven, to be released in 2015.

The first Star Wars film was released in 1977. The next two, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi went on to form the cult trilogy, starring Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford, much loved around the world. Later films released in the 1990s and 2000s were not perceived to be as innovative as the originals.

Lucas has handpicked his successor Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chair of Lucasfilm, to executive produce the new Star Wars movies. Kennedy has an outstanding track record having produced blockbusters such as E.T. and the Jurassic Park franchise.

George Lucas will be a creative consultant on the future films.
