First look: the new Girl with the Dragon Tattoo film
The author died before any of the books hit the shelves, and the publisher thought it wouldn’t sell – but despite that it’s become a multi-million selling book and film franchise. Get a first look at the new film version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo below.
The new film kicks off the screen adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s blockbuster Millennium Trilogy, the epic series of thrillers that have sold 65,000,000 copies in 46 countries and introduced readers to financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and avenging hacker Lisbeth Salander.
Seasoned journalist Stieg Larsson died of a heart attack on November 9, 2004, at age 50, shortly before The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was even published. The same subjects that were his impetus as a journalist – corporate crime, abuse of power, violence against women, questions of immigration, xenophobia and racism – became the core themes of his Millennium series. Though these subjects were staples the crime genre, it was Larsson’s focus on normally invisible characters, on ethics, the freedom of the individual and the nature of retribution that set his tone apart and led to the books’ wide appeal.
In the new film of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, and directed by Fight Club’s David Fincher – the book’s complex story has been simplified to focus on the relationship between Blomkvist and Salander.
