Next week is Emmerdale’s 40th birthday. Watch a video teaser for the special live show…

As Emmerdale fans await next week’s special live episode to mark 40 years of the Yorkshire show, some of the soap’s stars, including Adam Thomas, Gaynor Faye, Sian Reese-Williams and Sammy Winward, tell us how they’re feeling about it.

With two births, a wedding and a shock death, it’s going to be edge of the seat stuff. “What we basically have is a magnificent play, set on the world’s biggest stage, in the middle of the Yorkshire wilderness. You can just imagine the problems that could be unleashed,” says Tony Prescott, director of the live episode.

“As long as you can cope with them, these adverse conditions can actually make brilliant pictures. Sometimes the adversity can actually galvanise it into making it look even better. You do have to make lots of contingencies. For instance we have four dresses for Chas (Lucy Pargeter) in case it starts raining.”

Preparations have been going on for months. Two interior sets have been built especially for the live episode.

“We’re building the inside of the Woolpack which is going into the building which is usually just the shell of the Woolpack,” says Gillian Slight, Head of Design.

Roll on 7pm next Wednesday (ITV1). And look out for our special review of all the drama from the live episode next Thursday morning (18th October).
