Dream worlds, vampires and sorcerers in the pick of this week’s best films
Poor Pawel tries to escape a bewildering dream world, then gets set upon by a pack of bloodthirsty teenage vampires and werewolves in this week’s pick of the best films to rent.
Disappear down the rabbit hole
It’s finally here – Christopher Nolan’s smash hit Inception is out just in time to completely bamboozle you for Christmas. Once you’ve had your fill of turkey, you can delve deep into your subconscious and try to follow the story of Leonardo DiCaprio’s agent – a man specialising in stealing secrets from people’s dreams who faces his toughest task yet – planting an idea into the mind of a businessman. And you thought Countdown was complicated.
Fangs for the memory
Also out now is hit vampire sequel Twilight: Eclipse – following the continuing adventures of Bella (Kristen Stewart) as she tries to reconcile her love for pasty vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) and her friendship with werewolf Jacob. Can she make it work? Or is a fight to the death on the cards? Either way, there’s a good chance she’ll end up being lunch for one or both of them.
Magic in Manhattan
Nicolas Cage wigs up in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, playing Balthazar Blake – a master sorcerer in New York trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). He recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé.
Best of the rest
- Valentine’s Day – twelve Los Angelenos navigate life and love on the most romantic day of the year
- Cemetery Junction – Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s hilarious coming of age comedy drama
- Astro Boy – a young robot with incredible powers is created by a scientist in the image of the son he’s lost
- Valhalla Rising – two Vikings navigate the new world in this breathtaking action epic
- Cats & Dogs 2 – the ongoing war between cats and dogs is put on hold when they join forces to thwart a rogue cat spy
