Greek state television has been criticised for editing out a kiss between two male characters from an episode of Downton Abbey.

A scene from the current series, in which footman Thomas kisses a guest of Downton, a Duke, was edited out of the episode which aired at 22.05 local time on Monday night.

According to the BBC news website, Greek state television defended the cut, insisting it was not an act of censorship.

“The love affair between the two men… was not censored,” said Costas Spyropoulos, managing director of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation. “The kiss was not shown because of the time the programme was broadcast and the corresponding parental guidance warnings.” He added that the episode would be broadcast in full later the following night.

The country’s main opposition party has called it “an obvious case of censorship” and viewers in Greece have complained on social networking sites.
