Give someone a hand to get online
This October’s Get Online Week was a huge success – helping older people and those with disabilities get online across the UK. If you want to help someone get online, you still can – there are loads of free resources to help you.
I was amazed to find out recently that more than nine million adults in the UK have never used the internet. That means nine million people are excluded from all the benefits it can bring such as cheaper shopping and online job searching – and for people born before 1945, there’s a six in 10 chance they won’t have tried the web at all.
Some research we did before Get Online Week found that many of us are surfing the web on behalf of someone else. That’s great to hear, but wouldn’t it be better if they could surf for themselves? And since people tend to prefer to be helped, or even taught, by someone close to them, we’ve launched a new initiative.
Called Get IT Together, it’s designed to encourage those already online to help a friend or family member get online. There are hints and tips to help anyone willing to lend a hand, plus plenty of useful easy-to-follow guides for those new to the internet.
If you’re internet savvy, have you found any good ways to get friends and relative online? And if you’re new to the internet, what has helped you get to grips with it?
