New memory test for Dementia on iPad
A new iPad-based memory test has just been made available to healthcare professionals to help doctors diagnose dementia.
The CANTABmobile app is easy-to-use and allows doctors to carry out a short test that can decide whether someone has age-related memory loss or dementia. It was developed at Cambridge University using a test, known as PAL, which has been validated by over 25 years of research.
The app has only just been launched so it’s still early days. But if the early feedback is anything to go by, this could make a real difference. For me, this is a fantastic example of how technology can be used for good. It shows that there is no sign of the tablet or app revolution slowing down.
Last year, for example, researchers at Queen’s University Belfast devised an app called Brain Jog as part of a study to test just how effective “brain training apps can be in preventing cognitive decline and dementia”.
The study phase of this has now been completed although the games they devised are still free to use. I look forward with interest to their findings.
