A couple, yesterday

Planning to go away this year? Then pack your laptop – new research shows unromantic Brits prefer surfing the Internet to doing, well, almost anything else.

If you’re planning to head off on a break this year, don’t expect your loved ones to give you much attention – a recent survey by VisitBritain shows nearly two thirds of us would rather spend time on our laptops – with only a third preferring to spend romantic time with a loved one.

And while over two thirds of 18-25 year olds are more than happy to spend their time updating their Facebook status, tweeting or uploading photos, it isn’t just the younger generation that can’t leave home without being plugged in.

The survey also reveals that more than half of people aged 51+ take their laptops away with them on short breaks, and 89 per cent use the Internet while on holiday.

The research just goes to show how a broadband internet connection has gone from a mere luxury to a necessity for many – with a lot of people unable bear being disconnected for long. Is the human race about to die out as a result of all this unromantic laptop time? Probably not, but we should keep an eye on it.

Are you planning on going away this year – and will you pack your trusty laptop?
