An Ofcom report into the way we use communications reveals Brits spend more time than other nations shopping online – but have fewer Facebook friends than people in other countries.

We also watch more TV online, use our mobiles more to go online, play more games on our phones – presumably because we have less friends to occupy our time. Sad, isn’t it?

The report found that a whopping 79 per cent of UK internet users said they had ordered goods or services online in 2010, higher than any other European country.

But when it comes to online friends, it seems the UK is falling behind the rest of the world. According to the report, in the UK we have, on average, fewer friends online than Americans or Italians – but more than the French or Germans.

Unsurprisingly, social networking sites are most popular among 18-24 year olds in the UK, with 83 per cent visiting one or more of them on a daily basis, but that’s not as high as Italy, with 91 per cent of Italians having visited and a quarter visiting over five times a day.

We’re also increasingly using social networking sites for breaking news rather than news websites – with 35 per cent of UK consumers saying they do this.
